Our verse today reminded me of time travel. It is Romans 12:11-12.
Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.
Did you see the time travel? The past, present and future?
We are told to "keep your spiritual fervor". In order to keep something, you must already have it. I cannot keep a book that I do not have. In order to have something, I must have been given it, or learned it, or purchased it in the past. There was a time when you did not have something (like a video game) and then something happened (like a birthday) when you received it. There was a time when you did not have much concern about spiritual matters (before you knew Jesus) and then something happened (you got saved) and now your spiritual life has been turned on. Paul, the author of Romans, knew that we are most excited about something when we first get it. This applies just as much to our spiritual life as it does to a birthday present.
Paul also writes that while we are "serving the Lord" we should be "patient in affliction". This is the present part of our time travel. Once we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, everything we do is done as a representative of Him. How we treat our siblings, how we interact with teachers, the words we use when talking with friends. Sometimes things get rough for people who follow Jesus. They get teased, bullied, arrested, punished, tortured. Paul wants us to know that if we experience this kind of treatment, we should be patient because he knows we have the great reward of heaven waiting for us at the end of our lives.
This promise of heaven in the future is what allows us to be "joyful in hope". Hope is looking forward to something you trust is going to happen. Jesus told his disciples that he was going to prepare a place for those who believe in him. He was talking about heaven. Heaven is a promise that we can look forward to, no matter what happens in our lives. I could imagine what heaven will be like all day, but that's for another trip to the Dog Pound!
